Overview

A push-button fidget with a real return spring — printed in place, one piece, nothing to assemble. Push the button and a ball on a serpentine spring clicks over eight sharp teeth; let go and a printed spiral coil pushes the whole thing back up, clicking the other way as it comes. Every press is a round trip.

We chased this for months. There are plenty of print-in-place "fidget buttons" — a plate on a flexure that springs back once, silently. There are clickers that snap a toggle. We wanted the thing they all point at: a button with a stroke , that clicks going in AND coming back, off the plate in one piece. The trick that finally worked: the button pushes a ribbon INTO the coil and winds it, instead of tearing ribbon off it. A printed spiral will happily be wound; it hates being peeled.

Everything shows because it has to — the serpentine, the teeth, the coil winding and unwinding as you press. Seeing the guts is taking it apart with your eyes.

The wavy sides aren't decoration: they're the grip, and they show you how to hold it before you've thought about it. Fngers in the waves, thumb on the dished button.

Print settings — what the one in the photos was printed with, read back off the file:

- Layer height: 0.28 mm. Line width 0.6 mm on a 0.4 nozzle — the springs are exactly two lines wide (1.2 mm); if you change the line width the springs change with you.

- Walls: 3. Infill 15 % — there's almost no interior anyway.

- Supports: none. Brim: none. Every face is 45° or better by design.

- "Detect thin walls": OFF — or the slicer fills the working clearances and you get a fused block.

- Filament: plain PLA at 220 °C (Bambu PLA Basic shown). Silk works too, at the low end of its range.

- Result: ~12.5 g, about 45 minutes.

Dimensions: 80 × 42 × 10 mm body; ~113 mm with the button out. Stroke 28.7 mm, eight teeth at 4.1 mm.

Free the mechanism: off the plate, push the button once with a firm press — that pops the printed clearances free. It may feel snug for the first minute; a few dozen presses breaks it in.
