Overview

It started with a Philips Hue Go collecting dust on my desk. Great light, but let's be honest, as an object it's a plastic salad bowl. I wanted something that looked like it belonged next to the design lamps I kept saving on MakerWorld, without giving up the smart features.

So I built GLOW : a soft, chunky shade of three stacked rings on a fluted base, designed from scratch around real measurements of the Hue Go. And because not everyone owns one, there are also E27 and E14 base variants, same silhouette, standard light bulb. One shade, three bases. Pick yours.

The photo doesn't lie: with the light on, the rings glow evenly from top to bottom, the creases draw soft shadow lines, and the fluted base catches just enough light to show its texture. Warm white is my favorite, but the shade is plain white PLA, so every Hue color comes through clean.

- Shade – one model for all bases. Vase mode, no supports.

- Base – Hue Go edition - the lamp drops in loose and rests on a fitted ring. The stand nub locks into a hidden window in the bottom (it even indexes the rotation, so the cable always ends up at the back), the plug sits in an internal pocket, and the cable leaves through a small channel at floor level. Lift the shade, lift out the Go, nothing clips, nothing to break.

- Base – E27 / E14 edition - a central collar holds a standard lamp holder with its own shade rings. Feed the cord through the bottom, drop the socket through the collar, screw the ring on from below. Done.

Print settings

Shade (white or natural PLA, ~130 g, ±3 h):

- Spiral vase ON, 4 bottom layers (this becomes the flat top — it keeps the glow even instead of creating a bright hotspot)

- 0.16 mm layer height, line width 1.0 mm (important — this is what makes the single wall strong and the closing curve print reliably)

- Print upside down (flat top on the plate), textured PEI for a matte top

Base (~240 g, ±10 h):

- 0.2 mm, 3 walls, 10 % infill, no supports needed, everything is designed self-supporting, including the internal pocket ceilings

- Mine is printed in wood-filled rosewood PLA and I can highly recommend it: the fibers hide the layer lines and the flutes end up looking like a turned wooden bowl. Dry the spool first and keep the outer wall speed constant for an even color.

Safety (please read)

- LED bulbs only , max ~8 W / 800 lumen. This is PLA - no halogen, no incandescent, ever.

- Use a certified cord set with plug and switch (CE). This print holds a lamp holder; it is not a substitute for proper electrical hardware.

- An opal G95 globe fills the rings beautifully. An A60 would work fine too.

Honest footnote

The Hue Go edition is the one on my sideboard - measured, test-fitted and living its best life. The E27/E14 bases are dimensionally verified against standard hardware but I don't own a cord set myself, so consider them community-test versions: check your socket, and if you build one I'd genuinely love to see it in the comments. First successful build gets a permanent thank-you in this description.
