Overview

This project is a detailed 3D printable fan made lantern inspired by the lantern design seen in Witch Hat Atelier. Rather than creating only a decorative replica, I designed the model as a functional illuminated prop using an easily obtainable 80 mm transparent acrylic ornament sphere and a small battery powered fairylight string. The LED lights are placed inside the transparent sphere, while the battery box is hidden inside the upper cone of the lantern. One of the main features of the design is the mechanical pull-switch system. The battery box is installed inside a custom internal support connected to the upper hanging assembly. When the large ring is pulled upward, the support moves and mechanically presses the push button on the battery box. This makes it possible to cycle through the available lighting modes, such as steady light, slow flashing, fast flashing and OFF, without opening the lantern. The exact sequence of light modes depends on the fairy-light controller used. Removable Upper Cone The upper cone uses a custom twist lock mounting mechanism. Two Slider components are permanently attached to the acrylic sphere and engage with internal rails inside the Upper_Cone. Align the cone with the sliders and rotate it clockwise to lock it in place. Rotate it counterclockwise to release it. This allows the upper section to be removed whenever the batteries or lighting module need to be serviced. A small reference notch on the Upper_Cone helps align the mechanism with the seam between the two halves of the acrylic sphere. Lower Section The decorative lower cone is permanently attached to only one half of the acrylic sphere. This is important because the acrylic sphere itself is composed of two detachable halves. By attaching the Lower_Cone to only one side, the globe can still be opened when necessary. A dedicated Guide_Cone is included to help position and center the lower assembly correctly before gluing. The bottom ornament is completed with a two piece pendant connected using the included Small_Ring. Pull Switch Mechanism The fairy light battery box is installed inside the Support component. A small lever integrated into Support must be aligned with the push button of the battery controller. The threaded upper section of Support passes through Upper_Cone and connects to Top_Cone. The hanging rings are then connected to Top_Cone. Pulling the large ring lifts the mechanism slightly, allowing the internal lever to press the controller button. For the battery box, I recommend using a semi permanent adhesive, such as a small amount of hot glue, so that the electronics can still be replaced later. Wall Bracket The download also includes a complete ornamental scrollwork wall bracket, inspired by traditional decorative wrought iron hooks. The bracket consists of a main curved Hook, decorative spiral elements, a threaded Ball_Tip and a Wall_Mount. The Wall_Mount is designed to be screwed directly to the wall. For easier installation, I recommend attaching Wall_Mount to the wall before assembling the decorative spiral components. The finished bracket provides a matching display system for the lantern and completes the fantasy-inspired aesthetic. Dimensions and button positions may vary between manufacturers, so the internal Support may need to be adapted to your particular lighting module. Basic Assembly Overview Prepare the 80 mm acrylic sphere and remove its original hanging tab. Create a small cable opening at the seam between both sphere halves. Use Guide_Slider to correctly position and glue both Slider components. Test the Upper_Cone twist-lock system. Install the fairy-light battery box inside Support. Connect Support, Upper_Cone and Top_Cone. Assemble Medium_Ring and Big_Ring. Test the pull-switch mechanism. Assemble Lower_Cone and Bottom_Cone. Use Guide_Cone to correctly position the lower assembly. Glue Lower_Cone to only one half of the acrylic sphere. Assemble and install the decorative pendant. Assemble Hook-1 and Hook-2. Install Ball_Tip. Screw Wall_Mount to the wall. Install Hook and both decorative Spiral_Loop components. Hang the completed lantern. A complete assembly animation is included with the project. Compatibility Notice The internal mechanism was designed around a specific style of small fairy-light battery controller with a push button. Because these controllers can vary in size and button position, compatibility with every commercially available fairy-light set cannot be guaranteed. For this reason, STEP files and the complete CAD assembly are included so that the Support can be modified to fit different controllers. Safety Notice This model is intended for low-voltage battery-powered LED lights only. Do not use incandescent bulbs, high-temperature light sources or mains-voltage electrical components inside the printed lantern. Also test your adhesive before applying it to the transparent acrylic sphere, as some cyanoacrylate adhesives may produce white residue or frosting on transparent plastics. Future Updates This project still has plenty of room for experimentation and improvement. For future versions, I would like to explore: A completely 3D printable translucent globe, alternative sphere sizes, a simplified decorative version without the internal switch mechanism, a non removable version with fewer components, additional battery box supports and improvements based on community feedback.
