Overview

Summary Cont./Design Statement:

The Beyblades that our class made were a fun and exciting way to end the school year. With each Beyblade I designed, I aimed to create them so they were durable and could withstand plenty of hits while spinning and battling. This was an individual project, allowing each student to create their own unique design and showcase their creativity in a Round Robin Tournament.

Lesson Plan/Objective:

You will work independently and use SolidWorks to create a durable Beyblade. This project will help improve all of the skills you have learned this year, but most importantly, in using the Revolve feature. You will be responsible for designing and testing your Beyblade to ensure it performs effectively against others.

The Design Process in SolidWorks For Top 1 :

Rough Sketch

Before starting in SolidWorks, our class sketched the Beyblade in a 3.5 by 3.5 box on graph paper. We sketched 4 top views and 4 side views. Any ideas we had, we sketched on paper and then approved by Mr.T.

After getting the sketches approved, I started working on my first sketch in SolidWorks.

Executing in SoliWorks

The next step was bringing this sketch into SolidWorks. After making a copy of the launching peg that was provided for us, I created a new sketch in SolidWorks on the RIGHT plane. I then worked on creating the side view of the Beyblade base of the sketch above.

I decided not to include the trapezoid-like part when making this because I did not want there to be too many changes in shape at the top that might make it harder for the Beyblade to be stable. Instead, I focused on the sharper angles of the Beyblade. First, I started with what would become the bottom of the Beyblade. Using the Tangent Arc tool, I created an arc that reached the top of the constraint box. Next, I used the same tool to create a second segment that was straighter than the first arc. After that, I created another arc with a curve similar to the first one. Then, I used the Tangent Arc tool again to create a connecting arc between the previous arc and the launching peg. Next, I used the Line tool to connect the launching peg to the endpoint of the first arc. Then, I made sure the endpoint was rounded by creating a round part connecting from the first arc I made to the line I just made. Using the Power Trim entity, I trimmed the excess lines and made sure there were no errors. Finally, I exited the skecth making sure the sketch was complete.

Once I finished the sketch, I exited it and began turning the 2D into a 3D model. To do this, I used the Revolve tool, which creates a three-dimensional object by rotating a two-dimensional sketch around any selected axis. I selected the appropriate axis for the revolve and made sure the direction was set to Blind. After checking that what was shown on my screen matched the shape I wanted, I clicked the green checkmark to complete the model. This transformed my flat sketch into a solid 3D Beyblade model.

This was what the finished products looked like. As you can see, I decided not to do many designs on the top. I chose to keep it simple because I did not want many complications when printing.

This is the Beyblade printed. Because of the shape and the sharp edges, it was hard to remove the supports from the Beyblade. Besides that fact, the Beyblade printed well.

The Design Process in SolidWorks For Top 2 :

Rough Sketch

For my second top, at first I wanted to make a really complex design on the top and a curved design for the side, but I realized there was not a lot of time left in the year to do that, so I tried to stick to a simple design (not shown in sketch).

Executing in SolidWorks

I decided to create a more stable design instead of using multiple curves like the example shown above. I wanted the Beyblade to have a balanced shape that would improve its stability while spinning. To create my design, I only used the line tool. First, I made a small rectangle that extended outward from the Beyblade. Then, I left a small gap between the first rectangle and created a second, longer rectangle that also extended outward. Even though the design is fairly simple, I chose it because I believed it would provide a good balance between stability and performance when in battle. Unfortunately, I do not have a picture of the sketch to include, but the design consisted of two evenly spaced rectangular extensions that were Smart Dimensioned.

Once I finished the sketch, I exited it and began making the 3D model. I used the Revolve tool, which creates a three-dimensional object by rotating a two-dimensional sketch around any selected axis. I selected the axis appropriate for the revolve and made sure the direction was set to Blind. After checking that what was shown on my screen matched the shape I wanted, I clicked the green checkmark to complete the model. This transformed my flat sketch into a solid 3D Beyblade model.

Next, I used the 3 Point Arc slot to create one rounded arc on top of the Beyblade to add some design. After that, I used the circular pattern tool to make the arc go around evenly on the top.

This is the Beyblade printed. It printed surprisingly well amd preformed very well when in battle.
