Overview

๐Ÿ Disclaimer:

I didn't have any opportunity to test this model, because already we are using the homemade model (with a bottle) and I don't have access to the printer this month. I just saw what we use and what others create and I hope it works.

๐Ÿ Context / Justification:

The Velutine hornet Vespa velutina , commonly known as the Asian hornet, arrived in Europe from Asia around 2004. Since crossing our borders, it has become a pest and a threat to humans if it feels threatened, as well as an extremely serious and concerning threat to our beehives, since this hornet feeds on bees.

Read the full description

They are hornets measuring between 2.5 and 3 centimeters on average, black in color with thin yellow lines, and extremely resistant to impacts.

Therefore, it is an invasive species that needs to be eradicated.

In Spain, beekeepers hang plastic bottles containing different mixtures to attract the hornets. Once a hornet enters the bottle, it cannot get back out and eventually drowns in the liquid.

๐Ÿ ZWasps:

ZWasps takes this idea and adapts it to 3D printing using PETG.

There are already similar products on the market, but eradicating hornets requires a considerable financial investment, which can be partially avoided through 3D printing.

A hornet trap costs around โ‚ฌ5 as minimum, without the liquid that you have to put inside. Depending on the area, it is recommended to place a minimum of 20 traps, meaning that the cost only of the traps would be:

โ‚ฌ5 ร— 20 = โ‚ฌ100

The cost of the product used to attract the hornets would then need to be added to this amount.

Here we have an example from amazon Spain from a tramp.

Based on these traps, we have created ZWasps, with a material cost per unit of:

27,63 (g / 1000) ร— โ‚ฌ32.99/kg = 0,91 cent per unit when we use new PETG

27,63 (g / 1000) ร— (โ‚ฌ46.99 / 2) /kg = 0,65 cent per unit when we use recycled PETG

(using Prusament PETG)

๐Ÿ What is being proposed?

The idea is based on the original concept of using water bottles. However, instead of cutting up the bottles, we decided to create an adapter for them, so that you simply have to hang the bottle and let the hornets enter by themselves.

The bottles are recycled water or soft-drink bottles, which allows us to save a significant portion of the cost.

๐Ÿ How to print it:

Material: PETG

Nozzle: 0.4 mm

Layer Height: 0.20 mm

Infill: 15-20%

Supports: Yes, organic ones are fine

Print Orientation: The main body vertical, as it is provided and the hook lied on the flat surface. As in the photos.

๐Ÿ How to prepare the liquid?

Right now we are using this mix:

Water: 200 ml

Sugar: 10 grams

A little bit of vinegar

๐Ÿ How to install it?

Prepare the mixture you are going to use.

Take the plastic bottle and make some holes in the top using a heated awl, allowing the productโ€™s smell to escape.

Fill the bottle to 1/3 of its capacity and screw the ZWasps onto it.

Hang your ZWasps on a tree near your beehives.

๐Ÿ Creators log:

I know that you can find models like this on the internet or really quite similar, just think that I am not gonna have any benefit from this (apart of the prusameters), I made this to help beekeepers as my father to fight against this wasps.

If you like the idea, downloaded it or just thought it can be useful please leave me a like, it sounds silly but I am new at this world and it will help me a lot.
